Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST), also commonly referred as TJ or Jefferson, is located at 6560, Braddock Road, Alexandria, Virginia, is a state-chartered magnet school. This school is operated by Fairfax County Public Schools as its present within Fairfax County and is a regional high school.
TJHSST was established in 1985 and houses around 1800 students with 180 faculty staff. It has grades 9 through 12 and is publicly funded and also administered.
The admission process is selective and it got rid of non-application based admissions soon enough after its inception. Based on an admission test and prior academic records of the students the attendance at TJHSST is open to them in six local jurisdictions. It is quite transparent with an eclectic mix of freshmen, sophomores and juniors accepted after an admission test, interview and a cumulative evaluation of these results with the student’s past academic record precisely his middle school GPA on a sliding scale to reach a ranking process for selection. Going by the counts freshmen are inducted more than those of sophomore and junior categories.
TJHSST, as you can gauge from the name is a comprehensive study of science and technology fields. TJHSST has an extensive program of science and mathematics on offer with the likes of neurobiology, organic chemistry, marine biology, quantum mechanics, DNA science etc. It’s an intense study program as the courses’ curriculums are all of Honors or Advance Placement or even Post Advance Placement level. Senior students are also supposed to take part in laboratory research programs comprising of year long research projects or an off campus mentorship through one of school’s research labs which are available for various subjects such as computer science, microelectronics, robotics, astronomy, biotechnology, oceanography etc. TJHSST also sports a strong program for humanities and foreign language studies. It also has few Integrated study curriculums on offer which are different according to the student’s grades. Also mandatorily, every student of TJHSST is required to pursue a TJHSST Diploma.
TJHSST is consistently ranked as #1, best high school in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report from 2007 to 2011 though this year the rank dropped to #2, though it still holds the #1 spot for STEM and State ranks. A gold medal school exhibits a 100% proficiency in reading, geometry and college readiness index when compared to other AP or IB schools. TJHSST has produced more National Merit Semifinalists, USMAO qualifiers and Intel Talent Search Semifinalists than any other high school in the nation through all these years.
TJHSST also excels in its extracurricular fields of performing arts, academic competitions and athletic championships and has a notable list of famous and prosperous alumni. TJHSST has also witnessed visits from the likes of Barrack Obama, Lisa Jackson, Al Gore, Mandy Moore and others over these years.
