The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky Review
The Gatton Academy, also known as Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science is a public high school based on the Western Kentucky University campus, at 1906 College Heights Boulevard, Bowling Green, Kentucky. This school is maintained by the state funds of Kentucky. A relatively new institution established in the 2007-2008 year and has gained a lot of praise and fame in these few years of its operation. This year it’s been launched as the 14th residential school of USA insisting students to stay in Western Kentucky University campus focusing on their studies of relevant fields.
The Gatton Academy admits around 128 students every year i.e. 64 junior and 64 senior students comprising of an equal number of boys and girls who are qualified and eligible enough for high school. The admission process is a rigorous selection process where students are accepted on the basis of their performance grades, standardized scores, recommendations by teachers and community leaders, their excellence in extracurricular activities and a personal interview. Overall, it’s an all round evaluation of the student’s mettle to get enrolled with The Gatton Academy. Students should have a knack of studying mathematics, science or engineering as this school emphasizes on science and mathematics education as the prime focus propelling their career to one of these fields of interest. This school offers classes only in the grades of 11 and 12 and hence students are considered both high school and undergraduate students entitling them for scholarships, honors, undergraduate research programs and even in some exceptional cases for bachelor’s degree. As with some other high schools, here also it’s mandatory for students to pursue a high school diploma as required by the state of Kentucky.
As junior students of The Gatton Academy, they are awarded with the opportunity to earn 60 college credits during their school term here. Additionally, another facility provided to its students is that they can remain enrolled with their home school concurrently. If any student is dually enrolled as said then he is required to attend classes of the home school along with the mandatory high school diploma from The Gatton Academy. This is a beneficial option for students as they can still enjoy the benefits and services provided by their home school though some private schools may not permit this once you get enrolled with The Gatton Academy.
The Gatton Academy has grown gradually with time and that is perfectly reflected in its rankings. It has acquired a place in the Newsweek’s Public Elite list of schools consecutively in 2010 and 2011, which is a list of only 20 best schools across the whole nation. It has also been ranked #1 as Newsweek’s Top School in America in this year i.e. June 2012. The Gatton Academy has been named as a finalist in 2012 Intel Distinction School Awards. Also, there have been individual awards and recognitions achieved by its students and alumni for their research results.
If your student is eager to pursue challenging studies and researches in the areas of science, mathematics, technology, engineering or even astronomy or physics the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science would be surely a perfect choice.
