Suncoast Community High School Review
Suncoast Community School is a legendary school present at 1717 Avenue S, Riviera Beach, Florida, Palm Beach, USA. This school was founded in the year 1955 as Riviera Beach High School and then was renamed and established as Suncoast Community High School in the year 1970. It was a traditional public high school until it became a magnet school in the year 1989. However, earlier it was at a different address and moved to its new campus at the address given above just at the start of the year 2010-2011 which houses everything in one campus i.e. the office, the auditorium, the main student building, an open court, the gymnasium and the football field.
Given its stature, the admission process is a slight tough one. Students need to appear in the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) and the top 10 percent of the students are then evaluated on the basis of teacher and community recommendations and earlier grades and further selected through the process of a lottery. However, those who are from middle schools of the area successfully completing the IB Middle School program are automatically admitted.
Suncoast Community offers a curriculum of four different magnet programs namely Math, Science and Engineering (MSE), Computer Science (CS), Interdisciplinary Program (IDP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) and is for students of grades 9th through 12th. It presently accommodates approximately 1400 students. Every student must be a part of one or more magnet programs. Students can also dual-enroll themselves with another college or university of Palm Beach or Florida through the Palm Beach School District’s Dual Enrollment Program.
The Math Science and Engineering program focuses on science, math and engineering particularly emphasizing on physics. Dual enrolled students can combine Advance Placement subjects with IB courses.
The Computer Science module is a dedicated four year program to excel students in the field of computer science and engineering. For admission in this a certain score of GPA and successful completion of Geometry and Algebra 1 is mandatory in grade 8th.
The International Baccalaureate program is an internationally recognized rigorous curriculum with a compulsory requirement of foreign languages and an IB diploma.
The Interdisciplinary module is a general course of college preparatory level essential for the students to maintain a set GPA standard.
Suncoast Community High school also provides commendable support and facilities for extracurricular activities whether it is in academic, athletic or musical field plus several different clubs. A wide range of choices of sports are on offer too.
This school has been consistently named as one of the best schools in USA. It was earlier holding the 9th spot but moved to 7th in year 2011 on the High School Challenge Rankings of American High Schools. Suncoast Community has also been awarded the “Exemplary Advance Placement Comparative Government and Politics” by the College Board among schools with over 1000 students in the year 2005 though unfortunately AP Comparative Government is no more offered here. Newsweek and Washington Post has listed it in its Best Schools of America annual list and Suncoast Community High School has been in the top 9 schools at 3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th positions since 2006.
