Oxford Academy is registered as a public secondary selective type of school present at 5172, Orange Avenue, Cypress, California. It can be called a college preparatory school which is a combination of junior high and high school. This school has been established in the year of 1998 as a part of the Anaheim Union High School District and has come up to the ranks with time. Today it houses around 1200 students across grades 7 through 12 and around 70 faculty members making it close to 20:1 student to teacher ratio.
The admission process is slightly different when compared to other traditional high schools as this school has a practice of conducting a separate admission test which is mostly a trend common with magnet schools. A comprehensive entrance test comprising of English and mathematics including an essay writing section is to be passed by students applying to get enrolled with Oxford Academy. Additionally, there is a minimum GPA score requirement in the previous elementary school to stand eligible to appear in the said entrance exam. This exam is common for all the 8 junior high schools of Anaheim Union High School District and has 200 spots open for admission which is equally distributed among 8 schools in the district.
The curriculum in Oxford Academy is designed specifically for Honors and Advance Placement level of studies. Persistent hard work is required to keep up with this rigorous program as Oxford follows a continuous evaluation process. It has set mandatory score levels for its students to keep themselves sustained at Oxford Academy. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for grade 7 and 8 students, GPA of 2.7 for 9th and 10th grades and a GPA of 3.0 for students of grade 11 and 12, failing to stay above which for two semesters will result in the students being dismissed from Oxford and enrolled in some other school of their home district.
Oxford Academy boasts of a U-C guideline approved A-G course listing which states for a fact that Oxford maintains its quality and standard and recommendations of every class at par with those set by University of California for entrance into any of its colleges. Additionally, it also mandates its students to choose the Business or Health pathway in the junior years.
The extracurricular angle is equally stressed upon with facilities of a wide variety of sports made available namely baseball, tennis, basketball, swimming, softball, soccer, volleyball, tracks and has varsities in all these sports. The school students also maintain a newspaper, Yearbook and various clubs and groups such as National Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America and Health Occupation Students of America. The Varsity Baseball team has won California Interscholastic Southern-Section Championship for consecutive years of 2009 and 2010.
Oxford Academy has been ranked #4th in National Public High Schools category in 2009 by the U.S. News & World Report and now holds a Gold Medal, a #7 National Rank, #1 State Rank and #55 STEM rank. It also has a 10 out of 10 rating by Great Schools Rating and a community ranking of 4.
