Meet a Superstar: How to Treat a Genius
If you are a parent, then you know exactly how great if feels for your child to be called a genius. If you think that your child might be a genius but you aren’t sure about it yet, you can have him tested or you can observe him to see if he has the qualities of a genius like being unusually alert, having a high level of activity and curiosity or having an extraordinary memory. Having a genius child can be very rewarding but there are also some downsides to it. Geniuses possess some qualities that are common among them and these qualities sometimes need special attention which is why geniuses get treated differently by most people.
It’s alarming how a lot of children who are gifted with great intellect are being denied of certain opportunities and privileges just because people tend to pre-label them as having Asperger’s or autism. People who are diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome are often characterized to be very shy and introverted. They do not do very well in social events and occasions and they appear to have a great lacking for empathy. Although there are some people who are certified geniuses and possess these traits, it does not mean that all geniuses are automatically autistic or have Asperger’s.
Since most geniuses do tend to be very introverted, they are more prone to being left out on everything. If you have a genius child or know someone who is a genius, encourage social activities with and for them. Don’t let them feel different or left out. Do not make fun of them or their shyness because this will only make them more self-conscious. Rather, encourage them to go out, have fun and socialize. They may not always agree and like the idea but at least they know you see them as someone regular.
If there are shy geniuses, there are definitely verbally expressive and extroverted geniuses as well. These are the types of intellectually gifted people who like to share their knowledge with everyone. This type of genius is most often avoided because they have the tendency to appear like a know-it-all. If you know a genius who likes to talk about intellectual stuff all the time, do not avoid him. Try to talk him into starting a regular conversation about regular stuff like celebrities, games or whatever stuff you enjoy. If he starts talking about the intellectual stuff again, gently walk him away from the topic. If he insists, at least try your best to listen. Sometimes, geniuses like talking about the smart stuff only because they want to help people out and share what they know.
The most important thing you should remember about treating a genius is that you have to treat them with respect, just like you would any other human being. Some geniuses may be weird in their own little ways but they’re still human and they deserve to be treated like the average person. There have been studies that show that being a genius might be an abnormality and while there is room for possibility on that thought, geniuses should still be treated with respect.
