International School, at 445 128th Avenue, SE Bellevue, Washington is a public school comprising of a middle school and high school, established long back in 1991 serves grades 6 through 12. A part of Bellevue School District this school accommodates approximately 530 students and employs around 26 faculty staff which makes it a 20:1 student to teacher ratio which is substantially higher than the national average and this consists of some of the best students and faculties from across the country.
The admission process is simple on a lottery based method for all the students applying for 6th grade who are mostly students from the Bellevue School District. The academic curriculum is a unique seven year program of seven subjects comprising of humanities, mathematics, science, fine arts, international studies and physical education or health. On top of that it’s also necessary for students to select a foreign subject mostly French or German to be also learned for seven years to excel in fluency along with literature and social science and history in this language. At senior levels it’s mandated to complete a Senior Project relevant with real world application.
This school makes a wide spanned array of Advance Placement courses available to student and focuses more on academics and academic extracurricular activities. International School is proud to produce the First Robotics team which competes at national and global levels. The Junior State of America club, a youth club for political awareness is also well known for its credentials. The school also makes arrangements for options in sports like badminton, basketball etc along with music bands and choirs.
The International School has been a prominent name in the high school category and has quite a few achievements in its kitty to boast of. The U.S. News and World Report agency has awarded it a Gold medal and earlier was ranked at #9 but has gradually moved up to secure the 5th spot in the national ranking list of best high schools and #1 on the State ranking list. It exhibits a college readiness index of 100 and has a 3.5 to 4 score in math and English proficiency which translates to 99% in reading proficiency and 88% in mathematics proficiency when compared to other Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate schools. However, Newsweek magazine has rated this as #12th best high school of the nation in year 2007. The U.S. Department of Education has selected this school to be the Blue Ribbon National School of Excellence in 2004. The International School also sports a distinguished 10 out of 10 rating from the Great Schools Rating and a community rating of 4 out of 5.
Way back in 2002, a decade earlier, a documentary was made on the history of the school as The World of International School and has brought in an amount of media attention with its fascinating story telling of the origin and progress of the school.
