BASIS Tucson School Review
BASIS Tucson is a BASIS school in Tucson, Arizona, at 3825, East Second Street. It’s a part of the BASIS Schools Inc., which is a charter school operator in Arizona. It has six schools spread across Arizona out of which two of them are most noticed, one BASIS Tucson and another BASIS Scottsdale. BASIS Tucson is the very first i.e. flagship school of this group established at 1998 and Scottsdale being the next at 2003. Presently, BASIS doesn’t have a school outside Arizona. However, a charter has been allotted to them in Washington D.C. which will eventually be their first venture beyond Arizona.
As mentioned earlier, BASIS Tucson is a charter school. Now what exactly is a charter school? A charter school is a primary or secondary school that is built and maintained on public money but is exempted from certain rules, regulations and statutes that might be applicable to general traditional public schools which is granted in exchange of some kind of accountability of performance and results that’s typically mentioned on the school’s charter. Also, very importantly, charter schools do not charge tuition. These BASIS schools are organized into two sections- the primary one from 5 to 7 and the secondary school from 8 to 12. The BASIS model however varies from normal public high school one on the bases of reduced requirement facilities funds and classroom space which results to an approx half the square feet per student area when compared to a traditional public school.
BASIS Tucson is noted for its commendable performance in the standard tests like Advanced Placement, IGSCE and AIMS. Its curriculum has a little stress on Advance Placement with students being compelled to take a minimum of six AP classes. BASIS school prioritizes academics first and has been in the limelight for its academic performance too. It has been ranked among top ten schools of USA by Newsweek consistently since 2006 and was also awarded the 4th position by Washington Post last year and second nationally for mathematics and science by U.S. News and World report. BASIS Tucson has also gained a lot of media attention as it was featured in the film 2 Million Minutes.
This school follows a rigorous academic curriculum but doesn’t neglect extracurricular activities completely and is not oblivious to the all round development of its students. It has extracurricular options in academics, fine arts and sports such as chess, volleyball, fencing, basketball, rugby, cycling etc. It also supports a science team, drama and orchestra or bands in the field of music. The results of the school do testify and reinforce the academic performance accountability promised in the school’s charter with 86% students passing the AP exam and 42% of them being honored as AP scholars in the year of 2010, which is incomparably higher than other schools.
BASIS Tucson sports a diverse background and interests of its students which show in the pursued choices of study and research in the senior levels. Every student of BASIS Tucson is easily accepted across all post secondary institutions and emerge successfully in their respective areas of studies.
