BASIS Scottsdale School Review
BASIS Scottsdale, another school of the BASIS group, precisely the second one to come up after its flagship branch, at 11440 North 136th Street, Scottsdale, Arizona is a charter school operated by BASIS Schools. This school, established in 2003 is the first BASIS School in the Phoenix area. From its inception year till 2007 it only offered grades 5 through 8 but has expanded its campus in 2007 by adding grades 9 through 12.
Charter schools, as you may be aware, are primary or secondary schools mostly maintained by public funds but are not required to follow certain rules and statutes which are otherwise mandatory to other public high schools. This exemption is granted in exchange of certain promised result and performance achievement figures that are mentioned well in advance in the school’s charter and hence the name Charter school. Also these schools being maintained by public money are not authorized to charge any tuition fee.
BASIS Scottsdale boasts of an intense comprehensive rigorous curriculum concentrating on the all round academic development of every student. Though there is a certain added importance attached to science and mathematics courses but it also does emphasize equally on other subjects from its wide span of curriculum offered. Social science study is another prominent program of BASIS Scottsdale. Students are tested through a diagnostic test to evaluate their mathematical proficiency which is then accordingly monitored to advise him on selection of subjects. A better proficient student is allotted Algebra I in his sixth grade whereas a lower scoring student is given pre algebra to start with. This is however a much higher standard to maintain as other high schools introduce Algebra I in the 8th grade or so. A serious stress is given on Advance Placement program too with students compelled to take at least six of its unique Advance Placement exams during their school tenure.
The subjects are evenly spread across grades varying from foreign languages to economics with an in-depth math science and social science curriculum as mentioned. It has a range of Honors, Advance Placement and also Post Advance Placement courses on offer at high school levels with complete focus on academics and dedicated student support provided to every student ensuring his progress. A comprehensive curriculum on liberal arts is also presented and with a strong focus on academics extracurricular activities are restricted to academic contests, music choirs or bands and few sports such as basketball etc.
BASIS Scottsdale has achieved quite a lot of accolades due to its quality of performance and standard of education imparted. A healthy share of media glare was also showered upon this school as it was featured alongside its flagship concern, BASIS Tucson, in the film Two Million Minutes: The 21st Century Solution.
This school was ranked #1 as Topmost Arizona High School for Overall Performance by Business Week in the year 2009. It is one of the few names in and around Arizona to receive a 10 out of 10 rating from Great Schools Rating and a Community rating of 4 out of 5. The Daily Beast, Newsweek, rates this as 3rd best high school in America now.
BASIS Scottsdale thus is considered one of the best schools to get enrolled with to ensure a successful career ahead.
